Burse Club weekend set for August 2016

The Burse Club, founded in 1953 by Archbishop Toolen, was formed to provide scholarships to assist men in pursuing a seminary education

Montgomery — The annual Priests’ Burse Club Weekend at all parishes throughout the Archdiocese of Mobile will be Saturday and Sunday, September 6 and 7. Volunteers will be at the doors of each church following Mass to collect renewal dues and to sign up new members.

Membership dues are still $12.00 annually and this is the only requirement to be a member of the Burse Club, but all members are invited to attend the monthly meetings.

The Burse Club, founded in 1953 by Archbishop Toolen, was formed to provide scholarships to assist men in pursuing a seminary education in our archdiocese. Archbishop Emeritus Oscar H. Lipscomb was its first recipient while a seminarian in Rome and since that time monies collected over the past 60 years have been a vital source of funding and support for the many men who have followed in his footsteps to the priesthood. Many, who otherwise might not had been able to pursue their vocation, benefit from the burse.

The Archdiocesan Council of Catholic Women, with almost 7,000 members, sponsors the Priests’ Burse Club. At the annual ACCW Convention held in October a check is presented to our archbishop. This check represents money collected during the year from dues, Burse Club enrollments for both the living and deceased, as well as memorials for special occasions. This past year Archbishop Thomas J. Rodi accepted $136,500.

Mrs. Ginny Wilkins is Permanent Archdiocesan Burse Club Chairman for the Mobile Diocese. Assisting Mrs. Wilkins are Mrs. Margo Blackmon, Baldwin/Escambia Deanery; Mrs. Pat Schrand, Dothan Deanery; Mrs. Cile Mansfield, Mobile Deanery and Mrs. Mary Chamberland, Montgomery Deanery. These ladies are helped by many volunteers who donate their time by encouraging new membership, collecting dues and promoting the Burse Club.

All are asked to remember our seminarians by renewing their membership or becoming a member of the Burse Club September 6 & 7. Your support will be greatly appreciated.
